Wednesday February 20th
The TV weather reported that the pass E of Bakersfield was still closed this morning; also winds gusting to 70 mph in the desert. We won't try to go any further today. By tomorrow the ice and or snow should be cleared from the pass and we can proceed to Palm Springs to visit Gary and Jane Thompson who are spending a couple of weeks there.
About noon I ventured forth to visit Buck Owens' honky tonk, called the Crystal Palace. They have an exhibit there of various items from Buck's life and thousands of pictures of Buck and various Country Music stars. The two best items are the outrageous Cadillac Convertible mounted behind the bar and a pair of cowboy boots equipped with golf spikes! The Cadillac was supposedly decked out by a Hollywood designer for Elvis Presley and won in a poker game by Buck Owens in 1976.
Did some driving around and didn't get lost; I think Bakersfield is laid out more on a grid than most of the towns we have been in lately - that's comforting to person of Midwestern experience! Later in the afternoon I took Cathey to the nearest Verizon store to get the contacts downloaded to her new phone. After all the circus with Verizon, I think we finally have a replacement phone that works!
