Bakersfield to Banning, CA

Thursday February 21st
One more trip to the Post Office this morning to return a phone to Verizon - I hope that's the last time.  Then a little grocery shopping and then back to the trailer.  Cathey had the slide outs pulled in already when I got back.  I hurried and got the hook-ups un-hooked and trailer hooked to the truck.  We got on the road about Noon; and then promptly made a stop to buy some oranges and dates.  Shortly after you leave Bakersfield, you start climbing toward the pass at Tehachapi which is a little over 4000 feet; plenty of snow up there but the temp was in the 40s so it won't last long.  We had lunch at Burger King in Tehachapi and then got back on the road.
I had looked at the map and determined that I wanted to take US-395 S from its junction with CA-58 but I didn't look at where US-395 took me.  I thought we would end up on I-10 E of Palm Springs but when US-395 junctioned with I-15, I followed I-15 and pretty soon I was in San Bernardino - too close to Los Angeles for me.  But I followed I-215 when it split off and then I-210 which took me to I-10 and only about 20 miles of backtrack to the KOA in Banning, CA.  Banning is about 23 miles from where Gary and Jane are in Palm Springs, but we couldn't find vacancy in Palm Springs so this is close enough and the price is much better than it would be in Palm Springs.
Gary and Jane texted us when we were in San Bernardino; they came to see us at the KOA and we weren't there yet.  They went to have supper while we were setting up and then returned and we visited for awhile and made plans to meet tomorrow.
