Lake Havasu City to Bakersfield, CA

Wednesday January 30th
Finished stowing stuff this morning and got on the road by 9:10 - I was proud of us!  Then forty miles later we crossed into CA and it was an hour earlier and I felt even better.  There is a lot of desert on this route from Needles to Bakersfield.  Stopped at a truckstop in Barstow for lunch and gas ($3.69/gal).  Probably the two or three sights along this route are the 20 Mule Team Borax works near Boron, CA, Edwards AFB near Mojave, CA and the mountains just west of Tehachapi where the hills turn green and have cattle grazing on them.  Then when you get down the mountain, you see the air become a brownish yellow and you know you are too close to LA!  (And we were still over a hundred miles away.)
We stayed in the River Run RV Park, which advertises that it is adjacent to the Kern River.  Unfortunately there is no water in the Kern River; one of the locals told us that the water is captured upriver in a reservoir.  That must have happened before Environmental Impact Statements were required.  Water only flows here if the reservoir is full and apparently that doesn't happen every year.
It's a pretty nice park with real grass by our front door!  We went to a nearby 'Black Angus' Restaurant and had a prime rib that was so small, I could still eat dessert!
