Over the Sierra Nevada into California

Thursday March 22nd

We did our own breakfast this morning and got rolling by about 1030. As soon as we got on US-50 we started going uphill and it was a fairly steep climb, the Suburban was barely able to maintain 30mph at times. I think the summit between Carson City and Lake Tahoe was about 7300 ft and there was plenty of snow along the road from the storm last weekend. Lake Tahoe is about 6200 ft and the scenery is everything you hear about it. Once we left Lake Tahoe, we started the uphill grind again and went over another summit about the same height as the one between Carson City and Lake Tahoe. But, I was surprised to learn, that it was all down hill from there. I had expected several summits but there were only a few more uphill areas and none of them were very long or very high. Even the downhill grade was not too bad with only two areas posted with grades greater than 5%.

We had originally planned to stay in Placerville tonight but we were there by about 1pm so we stopped for lunch and then kept going to the KOA in West Sacramento. While I was setting up the trailer, Cathey called Rose and she came to see us briefly before she had to go to work at 5pm. She doesn’t have to work tomorrow so we will get together then.
