Excursion to Catalina, Oracle & Beyond

Friday March 9th

Up a little earlier than the past few days; in order to get ready for our luncheon engagement with Terye and her Mother, Eileen. We left at about 10 and I thought we were on schedule until just before we got there (1055) when Cathey said we were supposed to be there at 1030. So we all enjoyed a leisurely lunch and visited a little and then Terye and Eileen were off to the airport to pick up a visitor.

We decided to drive over to the Catalina and Oracle area where Cathey’s niece, Lynn used to live. I had a vague idea of driving around the mountains and coming back to our RV Park from the east. But I had not anticipated doing an excursion today so I had left my map book at the trailer. It took three stops in Oracle before we found an Arizona map and by the time I looked it over and found the route I wanted to follow, we decided it was too late in the day to make that trip.

So we drove from Oracle over to San Manuel and then took the road that goes up Mt. Lemmon. We probably went 6 or 8 miles on that road and turned around. My passenger was not enjoying the ride because the road kept getting narrower and the drop-offs on the sides of the road kept getting deeper. We went as far as the Peppersauce Campground, which looked like a nice place to camp but not very accessible for a trailer of our size.

On the return trip through Tucson we stopped at a Mexican Restaurant named Macayo’s Del Este and had a fine supper, although I thought their salsa had too much cilantro for my taste. But that just kept me from eating too many chips before the meal.

Gas that was $3.59 on Monday is now $3.65.
